Pirates notebook: Controlling opponents running game on priority list

NEW YORK — Because the Pirates continue to struggle with controlling opponents on the bases, manager Clint Hurdle said Friday that the coaching staff is addressing the issue with the pitchers.

“We revisited it in St. Louis,” Hurdle said Friday before a game against the New York Mets at Citi Field. “We’re going to revisit it here. And then we’re going to go hammer it down when we get home.”

The Pirates had allowed 103 steals entering Friday, the most in the major leagues. The 23 percent caught-stealing mark from Pirates catchers ranked tied for 25th in baseball.
