Six relievers combined to allow 3 runs, 3 walks and 4 hits in 3 innings. The Pirates led, 8-2, at one point, yet Mark Melancon had to enter the game for the save. In the final two games of the Cardinals series, Pirates relievers allowed 6 runs, 9 hits and 5 walks in 5u2153 innings.
“You’ve got to give them the ball for them to improve or get better or stay sharp,” manager Clint Hurdle said.
