PITTSBURGH — Antonio Bastardo’s sideways 2017 season has taken another turn, as the Pirates’ left-handed relief pitcher was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a left quad strain Tuesday.
Bastardo, 31, had been acquired from the New York Mets in exchange for Jon Niese towards the end of the 2016 season and was seen as something of a known commodity after having a successful 2015 season in Pittsburgh.
He pitched fairly well down the stretch last season, putting up a 1.25 WHIP and a 3.94 FIP in 24 innings. Coming into this season, Bastardo out-dueled Jared Hughes, Tyler Webb and Josh Lindblom for one of the final spots in the bullpen.
