KANSAS CITY — The Pirates placed shortstop Jordy Mercer on the 15-day disabled list today with a lower leg contusion and an MCL sprain in his left knee. They promoted infielder Brent Morel from Class AAA Indianapolis and transferred first baseman Corey Hart (shoulder) to the 60-day disabled list to make room on the 40-man roster.
Mercer injured his leg Sunday while tagging out Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez. Gomez slid into the side of Mercer’s left leg, and Mercer was eventually carted off the field. He is expected to miss approximately six weeks.
“It's a baseball play,” manager Clint Hurdle said Sunday of Gomez’s slide.
