The Pirates lost outfielder and first baseman Andrew Lambo to the Oakland Athletics Friday.
Lambo, 27, made the opening-day roster but missed most of the 2015 season because of plantar fasciitis in his left foot. He had one hit in 25 at-bats.
Right-handers Casey Sadler and Brandon Cumpton, who are both expected to miss the entire 2016 season, were sent outright to Class AAA Indianapolis. Cumpton had Tommy John ligament replacement surgery in March and had a shoulder procedure in September. According to general manager Neal Huntington, Sadler had Tommy John surgery after this past season.
The Pirates now have seven open spots on their 40-man roster.
