BRADENTON, Fla. — Right-hander Jared Hughes is listed as day to day with a left latissimus muscle strain, the Pirates announced this morning.
The latissimus dorsi is the largest muscle in the back.
In four outings this spring, Hughes has given up 11 hits and eight earned runs over 3u2154 innings. His last Grapefruit League action was March 16 when he allowed three hits and three runs in an inning against the Baltimore Orioles.
Hughes — nicknamed "The Fireman" by manager Clint Hurdle because of his knack for putting out fires to escape troublesome innings — has been a valuable member of the Pirates bullpen the past five years.
