Pirates intend to promote outfield prospect Austin Meadows

The Pirates plan to promote outfielder Austin Meadows, their top position-player prospect, prior to Friday’s game, the team announced Thursday evening.

The promotion means it is likely that Starling Marte’s right oblique injury will force him to the 10-day disabled list.

The Athletic first reported the team’s intention to promote Meadows.

The Pirates drafted Meadows with the ninth overall pick in 2013, the selection they received as compensation for not signing Mark Appel the previous year, out of Grayson High School in Loganville, Ga. Meadows reached Class AAA Indianapolis in 2016 after an exceptional half season at Class AA Altoona, but hamstring and oblique injuries have slowed his ascent.
