DUNEDIN, Fla. — A.J. Schugel is still not throwing after having a second opinion on his sore right shoulder.
Schugel visited Dr. David Altchek, an orthopedic surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City and the medical director of the New York Mets, for another look at the shoulder, which forced him from a game Feb. 25.
Dr. Altchek agreed with Pirates medical director Dr. Patrick DeMeo’s opinion, according to director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk. Schugel will take another five days off of throwing before the team reassesses his status.
Non-roster righty Bo Schultz, who had Tommy John ligament replacement surgery last March, was scheduled to throw a one-inning simulated game Wednesday.
