For the second year in a row, the Pirates took a shortstop with their first pick in the Major League Baseball draft. They selected University of Arizona shortstop Kevin Newman today with the 19th overall pick.
Newman, 21, hit .370 with 19 doubles and 36 RBIs in 2015, his junior season at Arizona. He hit for little power, with just two home runs in 165 games for the Wildcats.
