OAKLAND, Calif. — The Pirates added another veteran catcher to their corps Sunday when they claimed Eric Fryer off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals. The 30-year-old backstop batted .368 in 24 games for the Cardinals before being designated for assignment last week.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Pirates designated right-hander Rob Scahill for assignment. A corresponding active roster move will follow once Fryer joins the team.
Fryer debuted with the Pirates in 2011, two years after being part of of a package deal that sent Eric Hinske to the New York Yankees.
