The Pirates and backup catcher Chris Stewart have agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension with a club option for 2018, according to multiple reports.
Stewart, 33, batted .289 last season and was a reliable replacement for Francisco Cervelli in 58 games for the Pirates. He made $1.225 million in 2015 and was projected by MLBTradeRumors.com to make $1.6 million in 2016, his final year of arbitration.
News of the extension was first reported by Baseball Essential's Robert Murray.
The Pirates acquired Stewart from the New York Yankees Dec. 2, 2013, in exchange for minor-leaguer Kyle Haynes.
