The Pirates balanced their roster today by promoting outfielder Jose Tabata from Class AAA Indianapolis.
Tabata, 26, hit. 352 with a .422 on-base percentage, 11 walks and eight strikeouts for Indianapolis this season. He spent parts of the previous five seasons in the majors with the Pirates, earning rookie of the year votes in 2010, but he cleared waivers twice last season and was removed from the 40-man roster.
The Pirates optioned right-hander Wilfredo Boscan to Indianapolis, returning the roster to seven relievers and five bench players. Boscan was recalled Saturday after Friday’s 12-inning game against the Chicago Cubs that taxed the Pirates’ relievers.
