Pirates announce second round of cuts of spring training

BRADENTON, Fla. — The Pirates on Monday announced the second round of spring training cuts, which include some of their top prospects.

Pitchers Clay Holmes and Jack Leathersich were optioned to Indianapolis, as was outfielder Austin Meadows. Pitcher Damien Magnifico, outfielders Jason Martin and Bryan Reynolds, infielder Cole Tucker and catcher Christian Kelley were reassigned to minor league camp.

While Meadows is the Pirates’ No. 2 prospect, none of these players was necessarily expected to crack the opening day roster. Leathersich was one of the Pirates’ few left-handed relief options before they acquired Josh Smoker and Kevin Siegrist.
