Paul Zeise: The Pirates went 75-87 last year and didn't improve in the offseason

The start of a new baseball season always brings hope. There are many Pirates fans, however, who believe there is no hope this year. It has been a rough offseason, and fan apathy seems to be as high as it has been for quite some time.

Things are so bad for the Pirates, at least in perception, that Frank Coonelly and Neal Huntington have had more meet-and-greet luncheons with fans than usual. The goal is for them to listen to fans and reassure them that they are indeed trying to win the World Series.

As much as I want to believe this team is young, energetic and hungry, I just can’t see it as a contender.
