Paul Zeise: Are the Pirates committed to winning?

Pirates president Frank Coonelly said last December he’s “tired of the narrative” that the organization places profits over winning.

“It’s not about profiting,” Coonelly said. “It’s about putting together a winning team, allocating resources to the major league team to win a championship here in Pittsburgh. We need — in the media and otherwise — to talk about a lot of things. But the narrative that we don’t care about winning is just flat wrong. It’s offensive, too, but that’s another matter.”

Unfortunately for Coonelly, there is plenty of evidence to suggest the “narrative” might be true.
