CHICAGO — Class AA Altoona outfielder Bryan Reynolds will have surgery Friday to address a broken hamate bone in his left hand, Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Thursday.
Reynolds fractured the hook of the hamate bone Sunday on a swing. The switch-hitter was batting right-handed against Akron RubberDucks lefty Sean Brady in the third inning when he broke the bone. He remained in the game in the fourth inning before leaving in the fifth.
Dr. Ed Birdsong examined Reynolds in Pittsburgh Wednesday and will perform the surgery.
The 23-year-old Reynolds joined the Pirates from the San Francisco Giants in the Andrew McCutchen trade, after which MLB.
