Nova brilliant through 8, but Bucs fall in extras

PITTSBURGH -- Ivan Nova put together a brilliant, efficient start on Friday night, continuing his strong stretch since returning from the disabled list, but the Pirates finally faltered in extra innings as they lost, 2-1, to the D-backs at PNC Park.

After a masterful duel between Nova and Patrick Corbin, the D-backs took advantage of the Pirates' mistakes in the field to break a scoreless tie in the 11th inning. With two outs and runners on first and second, Ketel Marte tapped a ball back toward the mound. Catcher Elias Diaz scrambled in front of the plate and made a wild throw to first base, allowing Jake Lamb to score from second.
