MLB, players agree at last minute to expand playoffs

October is going to get a lot more crowded.

Major League Baseball and the players association agreed Thursday afternoon to expand the number of playoff teams from 10 to 16 for the 2020 season.

Marly Rivera of ESPN was the first to report the agreement. Joel Sherman confirmed it would be 16 teams.

The first series will be a best-of-three with all games being played at the home of the team with the better record. There will be no travel day.

While the league and players were interested in expanding playoffs as part of a new labor agreement for the 2020 season, the idea seemed dead once the two sides failed to reach a deal and decided to operate under the original March agreement instead.
