Mercer out 6 weeks for Bucs with knee sprain

Further tests Monday revealed that Pirates infielder Jordy Mercer has been diagnosed with a lower leg contusion and a sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee, and he will be out approximately six weeks.

Mercer has been placed on the 15-day disabled list and will use a combination of rest, treatment and rehabilitation to recover. In the meantime, the club has selected the contract of infielder Brent Morel from Triple-A Indianapolis.
