On Friday afternoon, Mason Martin was named the Gulf Coast League's Most Valuable Player. With one game left in the season, he has a .304/.450/.632 slash line, which includes a league leading 11 homers.

Martin was drafted in the 17th round this year and signed for an over-slot bonus of $350,000. He turned 18 years old right before the draft took place, which made him the third youngest player on the team. On Thursday, Martin set the GCL Pirates single-season record with 11 homers, breaking the mark set by Walter Young in 2000. The Pirates have been around since 1968.
