Jordy Mercer sits due to finger injury but is available off the bench

Jordy Mercer will not start Wednesday’s game against the Minnesota Twins because of a bruised and swollen pinky finger on his right hand, but both he and manager Clint Hurdle said he would be available off the bench.

Mercer injured the finger diving back into first base on a pickoff attempt Monday. Sean Rodriguez replaced him at shortstop, and Rodriguez will start at short Wednesday.

“Lots of improvement,” Mercer said. “Still a little bit black and blue, but way better than it was yesterday. I woke up yesterday and I was like, ahhh!”

The pinky does not affect Mercer’s throwing.
