MIAMI — Diverted from their original destination — San Juan, Puerto Rico — the Pirates were detoured to Marlins Park on Monday. Manager Clint Hurdle heard from plenty of Pirates fans who made the trip to San Juan anyway and hoped for a last-minute change of plans.
“They’ll be raising the Jolly Roger one way or another tonight,” he said before Monday’s game.
There was much rejoicing to be done. Jeff Locke threw a complete-game, three-hit shutout, and Gregory Polanco added another exclamation point to his breakout season with his first grand slam in a 10-0 win in a series opener against the Miami Marlins.
