PHILADELPHIA — Pirates third-base coach Rick Sofield didn’t mince words Thursday, a day after he cost the Pirates a chance at a ninth-inning comeback. Rather than hold Sean Rodriguez to load the bases Wednesday, down four with one out, Sofield waved him and paid the price.
A strong throw from Philadelphia Phillies center fielder Roman Quinn clipped Rodriguez.
“I just screwed that up royally,” Sofield said. “I thought there was something there that wasn’t. It wasn’t long after that throw was out of his hand that I realized I had made a brutal decision.
