Right fielder Gregory Polanco, the Pirates’ cleanup hitter, was removed from the game in the sixth inning Monday at PNC Park after running into the short fence in foul territory along the right-field line. Polanco was carted off the field, holding his right ankle.
Polanco returned from the 10-day disabled list four days ago, having recovered from a left hamstring strain. The Pirates — already without Jung Ho Kang, Starling Marte and Jameson Taillon on their short-handed roster — are five games under .500.
With one out Monday, Yasmany Tomas hit a fly ball that veered toward foul territory in right field.
