Gene Collier: Alvarez comes out of the dark

This 2015 Pirates offense has never been afraid of a long walk in the black forest of utter futility — I think it’s near Kittanning — but it probably hadn’t gone as deep into the backwoods as it had by the time three more hitless innings had introduced the new homestand Tuesday night.

Three more hitless innings, mind you, not at the hands of a master like Max (Yes I’m Making Nearly One Million Dollars Per Start) Scherzer, who no-hit the Pirates over the weekend, but three hitless innings against one Josh Smith, who happened to be making his major league debut for the Cincinnati Reds in a game when he couldn’t find home plate with Google Earth.
