For Francisco Cervelli, a Venezuelan presidential campaign event Thursday represented a convergence of his passions.
Cervelli, a native of Valencia, Venezuela, loves soccer. Big Juventus fan. He’s also been a vocal critic of Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro. So when Argentine soccer legend Diego Maradona showed up at a Maduro campaign event before Sunday’s election, it bothered Cervelli.
“I’ve got zero respect for a person like that,” he said. “I think Argentinians are amazing people, but this guy, it’s just a shame for their country.”
In the past, Maradona supported Maduro’s predecessor, Hugo Chavez, and became friendly with Cuba’s Fidel Castro.
