MILWAUKEE — Francisco Cervelli, the Pirates’ starting catcher, underwent a batter of tests Wednesday relating to an “acute-on-chronic” condition that has flared up at times this season, according to the team’s head athletic trainer Todd Tomzyk. His results were reviewed by physicians for the Pirates and Milwaukee Brewers, and his availability currently is uncertain.
Cervelli was scratched from the lineup Tuesday for “flu-like symptoms,” per the Pirates. Catcher Chris Stewart started Wednesday, which manager Clint Hurdle said was a predetermined move not affected by Cervelli’s condition.
Tomczyk said Cervelli first reported the illness in early April. Acute-on-chronic indicates a long-term condition which exacerbated by an additional factor.
