Former promising Pirates prospect Alen Hanson claimed off waivers by White Sox

The Chicago White Sox claimed super-utility player Alen Hanson off waiver Friday, ending his time with the Pirates organization. Signed by the Pirates as an amateur free agent in 2009, Hanson reached the majors last season but played sparingly before being designated for assignment last week.

Hanson, 24, was 18 for 88 (.205) in 64 games for the Pirates. He made the opening day roster this season, in part because he was out of minor league options and in part because of his speed and defensive versatility. Unable to help much off the bench, Hanson was designated for assignment June 2, with the Pirates aware he was unlikely to clear waivers.
