Felipe Rivero is headed to Florida, but not for the All-Star Game. The Pirates’ 25-year-old left-handed reliever was left off the National League roster despite posting an 0.82 ERA, second-lowest among qualified Major League relievers, over 44 innings in the first half this season.
There’s a chance the snub could be overturned if another pitcher is injured or unavailable. Rivero, however, seemed uninterested in being added late as a replacement. He called his wife before Sunday’s game and delivered the news, he said, so they’re going to the beach instead.
“I already made my decision,” Rivero said Sunday.
