BRADENTON, Fla. — Longtime manager Joe Torre, now Major League Baseball’s chief baseball officer, visited Pirates camp Monday morning to discuss changes to the instant replay system and the new limits on mound visits with the Pirates’ staff.
New restrictions limit teams to six mound visits by players or coaches per nine innings, not counting pitching changes. Each extra inning brings with it another visit. The rule includes exceptions for injuries and sign cross-ups between the pitcher and the catcher.
On Sunday, catcher Jacob Stallings said he would have visited A.J. Schugel, who left the game because of shoulder soreness, four pitches earlier than he did but hesitated because of the new rules.
