The Pirates on Friday announced they had signed Daniel Nava to a minor-league contract with an invitation to major-league spring training.
Nava spells some of the Pirates’ holes in the outfield and will have a chance to crack the opening-day roster as a left fielder. The 34-year-old switch-hitter played 80 games for the Philadelphia Phillies last season, slashing .301/.393/.421.
Previously, he played for the Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, Los Angeles Angels, Kansas City Royals and Phillies. He won a World Series ring with the Red Sox in 2013.
The deal had been reported earlier this week by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
