The impingement in Corey Hart’s left shoulder resulted from an overextension while catching a batted ball in batting practice, Hart said Thursday.
Hart went on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Tuesday.
“Somebody hit a ball, and I kind of just reached back to grab it and it kind of jerked it back,” Hart said. “Ever since then, it's been kind of ongoing.”
Hart tried to play through the issue and had started four games since June 14 when the Pirates faced several left-handed starting pitchers. The Pirates replaced Hart on the active roster with right-hander Chris Volstad, who joined a bullpen that had covered a lot of innings in the previous two games.
