PITTSBURGH -- Pirates ace Gerrit Cole is making progress in his recovery from a right tricep strain, but he will not be available Sunday, the first day he is eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list, according to head athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk.
Cole has resumed playing catch on flat ground, but still needs more time to recover before throwing off a mound.
"It's encouraging that he's back out there," Tomczyk said. "You always take a pause when someone experiences discomfort, soreness, whatever it might be, and then once they show a pain-free clinical exam and can demonstrate to you that they're ready, you push forward.
