Gerrit Cole has had many great starts in his three year career as a starter with the Pirates, but Sunday afternoon may have been his finest outing. And from a timing perspective, a dominating pitching performance is exactly what the Pirates needed. Although the calendar still reads May, and the baseball season is still relatively young, this series against the Cubs had taken on much greater importance, not only from a standing standpoint, but just from a mental standpoint. Not only has the club dropped five straight against the division leaders, but they have slipped a distant nine games out, facing the possibility of a ten game deficit heading back home for a lengthy home stretch.
