Burdi undergoes season-ending surgery

HOUSTON -- Nick Burdi will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing vascular surgery Tuesday in St. Louis.

The Pirates rookie reliever had surgery aimed to relieve symptoms of neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome. Burdi had been on the injured list since April 23 because of nerve irritation in his right elbow and forearm.

Burdi is expected to be fully recovered by the time spring training begins next February.

Facing the Diamondbacks at PNC Park, Burdi collapsed to the ground in pain after throwing a pitch in the eighth inning of a 12-4 loss.
