The Pirates wasted another strong start from rookie right-hander Trevor Williams Sunday at PNC Park, dropping a 5-3 decision to the San Francisco Giants after the bullpen again failed to protect a lead.
After six scoreless innings, Williams ran into trouble in the seventh, putting runners at second and third with no outs. Left-hander Tony Watson surrendered back-to-back RBI singles to left-handed hitters Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford. A sacrifice fly gave the Giants the lead. Belt’s two-run blast off rookie Edgar Santana in the eighth helped seal the series sweep.
The Giants (33-51) have won six games in a row — their first sweeps this season.
