PITTSBURGH -- The Pirates activated shortstop Jordy Mercer on Sunday afternoon and accommodated him on the roster by placing Travis Ishikawa on the disabled list with a lower back strain.
Mercer was not in the starting lineup for Sunday night's game against the Giants in PNC Park.
He had gone on the DL on July 20, the day after suffering a sprained left knee and bruised lower left leg when upended on a play at second base in Milwaukee.
Mercer had gone on rehab assignment on Aug. 11 to Triple-A Indianapolis, where he played seven games.
