Bill Brink's Pirates report card: May 2017

The Pirates concluded the month of May by losing two series during a homestand to fall to 24-30, last place in the NL Central — and 4½ games out of first.

The division is a mess. St. Louis is .500. The Cubs have lost six in a row on the road, against the Dodgers (fine) and the Padres (yeesh). The Reds just got swept in Toronto. Only the Twins have fewer victories, at 26, among first-place teams than the 28-25 Brewers.

The Pirates went 13-17 in May and were outscored by 18 runs.

Offense

Somehow the Pirates ranked 12th in on-base percentage, 13th in slugging percentage and Wins Above Replacement, ninth in home runs, 11th in batting average and 12th in advanced metrics like weighted on-base average (wOBA) and weighted runs created, and still scored 122 runs, the eighth-most in the NL in the month.
