Ben Cherington eyes adding to Pirates without mortgaging future

Will the Pirates be buyers or sellers at the MLB Trade Deadline? That’s the question on every fan’s mind as we approach the halfway point of the regular season.

At 39-41 entering Friday, the Pirates are two games out of a National League Wild Card spot and eight-and-a-half games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for the top spot in the NL Central, so there’s still a chance they could add some players in hopes of resurrecting Buctober.

General Manager Ben Cherington recently sat down with the crew of MLB Network’s MLB Now to discuss what lies ahead for the Bucs, and while he didn’t say if they were targeting specific players, he did indicate that they don’t want to waste the talents of starters Mitch Keller, Paul Skenes and Jared Jones, but they also don’t want to throw the kitchen sink at the trade market, to put it lightly.
