MIAMI — Barry Bonds was surprised to hear today that it was the 30-year anniversary of his major league debut. He led off for the Pirates against the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Orel Hershiser and played all 11 innings of a 6-4 loss at Three Rivers Stadium.
Bonds remembers other details from that day.
“I went 0 for 5 with three strikeouts,” he said, cracking a smile.
Standing in the home dugout at Marlins Park, Bonds, the first-year Marlins hitting coach, reminisced about his years in Pittsburgh and with the Pirates organization. He was the sixth overall pick in 1985 and made his major league debut less than a year later.
