CINCINNATI — Austin Meadows and Jung Ho Kang could represent two of the more unusual cases of a team sending its players to winter ball.
Neither is a sure thing. Kang still needs a visa to enter the Dominican Republic and the Pirates are still discussing whether winter ball is the best course of action for Meadows, their top prospect. But they are working through both, so as to help two players important to their future recoup some lost at-bats.
Meadows, a 22-year-old outfielder, missed nearly two months because of a strained right hamstring and recently missed more time because of oblique tightness.
