ST. LOUIS — The timer on the television screen in the Musgrove household ticked down to less than a minute. The Toronto Blue Jays were on the clock with the 46th overall pick in the 2011 draft, and Joe Musgrove, his family and a few friends were gathered to watch.
Musgrove’s phone rang. It was Alex Anthopoulos, the general manager of the Blue Jays.
“Is this still your number?” Anthopoulos asked, referring to Musgrove’s signing bonus. “Are you willing to sign?”
Musgrove said absolutely. Five seconds later, he watched Roberto Alomar walk to the podium and call his name.
