The Pittsburgh Pirates have added Justin Masterson. It's a minor-league deal for the former All-star pitcher.
Masterson was on the Boston Red Sox last year, but posted a 5.61 ERA in nine starts. He walked 27 batters and underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder in October after the Red Sox cut him in August.
From 2010-13, Masterson was great for the Cleveland Indians. He posted a 3.45 ERA in 2013 and was an all-star. The Indians traded for Masterson before the 2009 trade deadline in a deal that sent Victor Martinez to the Red Sox.
The news was first reported by Jon Heyman. This is not the first time the Pirates have expressed interest in adding Masterson.
Masterson is just 31 years old and giving him a minor league deal is a low-risk move by the Pirates. If he finds his some semblance of his previous form, the Pirates could have another solid starting pitcher.
