Pirates to trade for Red Sox pitcher Jake Peavy?

In this Pirates rumors and news update, the Pittsburgh Pirates are rumored to be one of the final three teams interested in trading for Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Jake Peavy prior to the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline.

Per Sporting News-verified baseball blogger Max Wildstein, the Pirates could see Peavy as an essential piece to their puzzle heading into a wild NL Central pennant race:

The 33-year-old righty is currently suffering through one of the worst seasons of his professional career, posting a 1-8 record with a 4.59 ERA in 117.2 innings pitched. He is currently on pace to walk 78-to-80 batters this year, which would land as the second-worst mark of his twelve-year plus MLB career.

Peavy's durability is also a potential issue, as he has thrown over 200 innings just once in his previous six seasons. However, he's on pace to do so this season and a move back to the National League could give him a fresh start (and new faces) to work with.

The Boston Red Sox look to be starting an aggressive push to shop him, pushing his next start out to July 22nd in Toronto - a move that Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe indicates could mean the end of Peavy's stay in New England.
