In Pirates news tonight, a new trade possibility has been brought to light which could help the Pittsburgh Pirates with their current issues at shortstop.
Per Zach Morrison of Rant Sports, "the Pirates could solve their shortstop problem by making a trade for Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Didi Gregorius. The DBacks have made it well known that they are open to moving Gregorius after he lost the starting shortstop job to Chris Owings in Spring Training. Gregorius is hitting well at Triple-A for the Diamondbacks, hitting .309/.395/.455 with a 128 wRC+."
Currently, the plan of having Jordy Mercer (.208/.246/.285) and Clint Barmes (.220/.313/.268) handle the duties at shortstop has proved to be untenable. Both shortstops have started off the 2014 MLB season cold at the plate, making a trade a possibility as the calendar shifts to June in the next week or so.
In order to secure Gregorius, the Pittsburgh Pirates would most likely have to part with one of the MLB-caliber starting pitchers in their farm system - a gamble which could pay dividends if Gregorius' Triple-A success can translate at the MLB level.
