You can’t win them all every single month of every single baseball season, and these next three guys are living proof of that. Here’s our list of 3 Pittsburgh Pirates Players Who Have Been A Disappointment So Far In 2015.
SS Jordy Mercer
We place Mercer on this list with a caveat, seeing that he's doing his normal heat-up-in-June routine. However, we can't wipe away the fact that Mercer was hitting just .192 entering the month of June with limited pop and a rally-killing run with runners in scoring position. He's on the right track after his 10th inning walkoff double against the Braves on Friday, but he needs to keep the train on the tracks for awhile yet to escape this list for good.
LHP Jeff Locke
Locke's job is to eat up innings at the back of the rotation, but he's only been able to last just over 5 1/2 innings per start over 14 appearances in 2014. His 4.73 ERA and 1.51 WHIP are troublesome even for a fifth starter, regardless of the fact that lefty depth starters are hard to come by.
OF Gregory Polanco
We'll let CBS Pittsburgh's Colin Dunlap do the heavy lifting here:
The numbers yield an indisputable fact with Polanco, who rarely gets at-bats against left-handers and has become, for the most part, a platoon player in right field. Headed into play on Thursday, he had just six hits since June 7 and, even with that added muscle in the off-season, hadn’t hit a home run since the last day of May and has only three on the season.
El Coffee has become a cup of decaf.
His batting average in April was .278, but he hit only .226 in May and in at-bats in June is two points lower than last month. His slugging has dropped steadily as well, from a slugging percentage in April of .405 to a June slugging of .299.
Listen -- Polanco's got all the makings of a star, both based on his intangibles and raw tools. However, he hasn't put it together for a good two months now and he appears to be getting farther out in the ocean as the summer progresses.
