PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins are moving on to the second round of the Calder Cup Playoffs after defeating the Providence Bruins 5-4 in double overtime Saturday night at Dunkin’ Donuts Center.
Rookie Jake Guentzel put forth a two-goal, two assist performance including the overtime game-winner as the Penguins swept their opening round best-of-five series with the Bruins, three games to none.
It didn’t take long for the Penguins to strike first, as Guentzel picked the top corner 35 seconds into the contest for a 1-0 Wilkes-Barre/Scranton lead.
After Zane McIntyre came up with a series of highlight reel saves to keep the Penguins at bay, Dominik Simon redirected a shot through the Bruins goaltender’s legs and into the net.
