U. S. Steel has pulled out of a deal to build its new headquarters at the former Civic Arena site in the lower Hill District.
The steelmaker notified the Pittsburgh Penguins today that it was not moving forward with the project.
"Obviously, it's an unfortunate turn of events. It's not surprising, as you can imagine," said Travis Williams, the Penguins chief operating officer.
The company had reached a deal with the team, which holds the development rights to the arena site, and developer Clayco to build a new headquarters adjacent to Consol Energy Center last year.
