A businessman who owns the ice rink where the Pittsburgh Penguins used to practice and other nearby businesses goes on trial today in U.S. District Court on charges of willful failure to pay more than $1 million in payroll taxes for his employees.

Steven Lynch, 61, a Squirrel Hill lawyer who owns the Iceoplex in Southpointe, as well as a gym, a restaurant and real estate firm, was indicted in 2014. Federal prosecutors added new counts last year.

In all, he faces 29 counts of failure to pay and corrupt obstruction of the revenue code in relation to creating a shell corporation to shield money from the IRS.
