Having two No. 1 goalies was one of several reasons the Penguins won a second consecutive Stanley Cup.
While allocating $9.5 million to that position — what Matt Murray and Marc-Andre Fleury would have cost against the salary cap — isn’t realistic, general manager Jim Rutherford and his staff are thinking hard about how to structure starts in 2017-18.
More specifically, how having two very capable guys can really help come playoff time.
The first part of that is this: Rutherford believes 22-year-old, would-be rookie Tristan Jarry can play in the NHL this season, but they’re currently debating whether that’s the best thing for him.
